11 Vacation Safety Tips By rwakefield We have all heard stories of the horrendous problems that can occur due to surprise illness whilst away on vacation.
A family who contracted a awful dose of diarrhoea whilst travelling in an exotic holiday resort and ended up spending all week in the apartment or villa. A elderly relation who foolishly imbibed the local tap water, went down with terrible stomachache and dizziness and still hasn't recovered months later. One of the children gets attacked by some horrible local insect and needs medical treatment.
The end result is often the same, it usually spoiled the vacation, caused financial ruin and put them off foreign vacations for a few years.
At any rate, you want to enjoy your holiday, so here are a few pointers to keep you sane and make sure that that you enjoy your trip abroad:
Forward planning
Obviously you can't predict every contingency, there are a few easy steps you should take to make sure that you all enjoy your holiday.
* If you suffer from travel sickness, there are steps you can take to improve the problem. If you are in a car, ask if you can sit in the front seat and keep your eyes focused outside the car. If traveling by boat or ship, stay near to the middle of the ship. If bothered by air sickness, try to sit near to the centre of the aircraft. If anyone in your party suffers with very bad travel sickness you may want to take one of the well known travel sickness medications.
* Ensure to take the contact information of your pharmacist and medical provider.
* Ensure that you remember to pack first aid supplies that you may require in the locations you are visiting.
* Do a bit of research and check about the weather conditions at your destination. This will affect the clothing to pack, whether you will need to take sunglasses, and the protection factor of the sun lotion that you need to buy.
Make sure you have travel insurance Travel health policies are all different, so assess your particular circumstances and make sure that your health policy provides the cover that you need. Before you start your vacation, become an expert on your policy and in particular, its limits. If you are

not clear over sections of the policy, ask for clear explanations before travelling. Most importantly, make sure you include the travel policy with the rest of your travel documents.
* With your chosen policy, are you able to pay to extend your cover if you extend your trip?
* Does your health policy provide cover if you participate in any exciting sports you are expecting to enjoy.
* When deciding on your health policy, check and compare the ways in which they make the payments. Are you required to pay your costs first, claiming it back at a later date, or is the money simply transferred from the company to the health center ?
* When deciding on your travel policy, check whether each policy forces you to only make use of specified physicians and health centers.
Food safety when overseas
One of the most upsetting things that can happen to you on your vacation, is to get serious food poisoning. Here are a few pointers to help you maintain good health in your holiday destination:
* If you can, avoid consuming uncooked meat or meat that is cooked earlier and served later.
* Be very cautious with seafood, particularly shellfish that may be the product of fishing in water that is contaminated.
* Take care with the water. If you can, drink only branded bottled water, and check the seal on the bottle top to ensure it is not an old bottle that has been filled with tap water by unscrupulous sellers. If you have any doubts over the quality of the local water, it is a good idea to even stay clear of ice cubes in your drinks. If you use the local tap water, make sure you boil it well, (5 to 10 minutes).
